Swimming and Diving Sweep Holy Cross

Emily McAuliff and Jen Busby both set new diving records for the Raiders.

HAMILTON, N.Y. - The Colgate swimming and diving squads swept the Crusaders of Holy Cross on Saturday at Lineberry Natatorium.  The men's team won by a score of 164-61, while the women's squad earned a 160.5 - 79.5 victory.  Highlighting the competition for Colgate were Jen Busby (Andover, Ma.) and Emily McAuliff's (Springfield, Ill.) record-breaking performances on the diving boards.

Busby, last weeks Patriot League diver of the week, took first in the three-meter dive with a new school record score of 281.48.  McAuliff notched a new record score in the one-meter dive with a final tally of 280.5.  "This by far was the highlight of the entire meet," remarked head coach Stephen Jungbluth.

The highlights for the swimming events were the emergence of the swimmers of the class of 2007.  Freshman Laura Driscoll (Haddonfield, N.J.) recorded her first collegiate victory with a win in the 1000 freestyle in a time of 10:57.08.  She followed that up with a victory in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:21.94.

Freshmen Kerianne Fitzsimmons (Red Hook, N.Y.) and Leslie Petsoff (Glen Ridge, N.J.) recorded their initial victories as well.  Fitzsimmons won the 200 freestyle in a time of 2:00.18, while Petsoff tied for first in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:18.14.

On the men's side, Zach Grobengieser (Spencerport, N.Y.) recorded his first victory in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.30.  David Traini (Moorestown, N.J.) won his first-ever 200 individual medley with a time of 2:03.24.  Freshman Andrew Kodesch (Titusville, Fla.) took top honors in the 200 butterfly in 2:02.23, while David Hill (Pricles Crossing, Ma.) wrapped up the freshman string of victories with a time of 2:20.09 in the 200 breaststroke.

"It was nice to be able to earn a victory against our first Patriot League competitor.  It was also great to see the freshman class challenge some of the upperclassmen for top spots on the team," said Jungbluth.  "While that is encouraging to see this early in the year, doing that in a championship meet is an entirely different thing, there's a long way to go and the competition will get tougher with Army and Navy right around the corner," cautioned Jungbluth.

The Raider swimming and diving squads are at home for their third straight meet when they host Army, Saturday, November 1, at 12 p.m.
