The 2012 Colgate Male Athlete of the Year Award was presented to senior Austin Smith of the men's ice hockey team. Smith had one of the best seasons in program history as he tallied 57 points, including 36 goals to lead the nation. He was selected as a Hobey Baker Hat Trick Finalist for the country's top player and was named an AHCA First Team All-American. The senior finished just a few goals shy of the all-time single season record and ended the year six goals ahead of any skater in the nation.  He concluded his career with 160 points for 16th on the all-time points list and the most by an American-born player.  He is also sixth all-time in goals with 70, and had 16 multi-point games, with two hat tricks.
