NORFOLK, VA. (3/7/2010) – Natalie Siedhof (Canton, Pa.) blasted her first collegiate homer and Jesse McCarrick (Oak Hill, Va.) went the distance on a five-hitter as Colgate closed with a 3-1 victory over Norfolk State at the Spartan Clash, Sunday. The Raiders posted their second victory over St. Bonaventure in two days with a 3-1 decision in Sunday's opener.
Colgate, now 5-1 on the year, opened with one in the bottom of the second as Melissa Babb-Renta (Glenview, Ill.) singled up the middle to bring home Emmie Dolfi (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) from second. The senior finished with two of the Raiders' five hits.
After the Spartans tied the contest at 1-1 with an unearned run in the top of the third, the Raiders regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, Siedhof ripped a two-run homer to provide Colgate with the winning margin. The freshman's homer also scored Stephanie Hartquist (Homer, N.Y.), who recorded a one-out double. Jennifer Ortega (Aberdeen, N.J.) singled to open the inning to stretch her hit streak to 11 games dating back to last season.
The Spartans threatened in the seventh, however McCarrick settled down to gain her third victory of the year. With one out and runners at second and third, the senior ended the contest with a fly out to left and a strikeout.
In the opener, Colgate got all it would need against St. Bonaventure in the third inning scoring a pair of runs. After Alana Dyson (Grovetown, Ga.) led off with a single to first, Ortega blasted her third homer of the year to give the Raiders a 2-0 lead. The cushion grew to 3-0 in the fifth as Ortega scored on a single by Brittany Hanrahan (Frankfort, Ill.) The junior posted two of Colgate's four hits versus The Bonnies.
Michelle Hollebeke (North Reading, Mass.) took a shutout bid into the top of the seventh, however, St. Bonaventure pushed across an unearned run. The sophomore scattered three hits and three strikeouts over seven innings to get the victory.
Colgate returns to action next Saturday as it travels to the Sunshine State to compete in the Rebel Games in Kissimmee. The Raiders will play 12 games over six play dates outside of Orlando. Colgate will play Wagner (1 p.m.) and Manhattan (3 p.m.) next Saturday.
