DOVER, DE (3/27/2010) – Jesse McCarrick (Oak Hill, Va.) and Lacy Ver Steeg (Elk Grove, Calif.) combined to pitch a perfect game as Colgate downed Maryland-Eastern Shore 9-0 in the first game of the Sean Savage Epilepsy Awareness Tournament, Saturday. Delaware State, the host school, handed the Raiders a 13-4 defeat in the night cap.
Colgate, 15-5 overall, opened the first inning with back to back singles by Melissa Babb-Renta (Glenview, Ill.) and Alana Dyson (Grovetown, Ga.). Sophomore Jennifer Ortega (Aberdeen, N.J.) drove home Babb-Renta from second with a single up the middle. The Raiders' second run scored on a Hawks' error. Dyson's single stretched her hit streak to 12 games.
The Raiders added five runs in the second on five hits. Emmie Dolfi (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) and Courtney O'Connell (Palm Harbor, Fla.) singled and were moved to second and third on a ground out. Colgate's first two runs scored on an error by second baseman. Ortega doubled to left center and eventually came around on a two-out single to center by Natalie Siedhof (Canton, Pa.).
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Colgate closed scoring with back-to-back doubles by Ortega and Stephanie Hartquist (Homer, N.Y.), both to left center. Ortega finished three for three with a single and a pair of doubles
McCarrick went the first three innings fanning four batters to improve to 6-1 overall. Ver Steeg pitched the remaining two innings in the shortened game and struck out one.
The Hornets scored 10 of their 13 runs in the fourth and fifth innings en route to the victory over the Raiders.
Colgate drew first blood in the top of the first on a two-out single to right center by Hartquist. The Raiders extended their lead with two more in the second on a run scoring single by Dolfi and a double to left field by Babb-Renta. Delaware State squared the game at 3-3 with a three-run bottom of the second before taking the lead for good with a six-run fourth inning. Colgate scored its final run in the fifth as Brittany Hanrahan (Frankfort, Ill.) scored from second on a double by O'Connell. Dyson did post a hit in four at bats to move her hit streak to 14.
Michelle Hollebeke (North Reading, Mass.) surrendered five earned runs in three innings and fell to 8-2 on the year.
Colgate returns to action Sunday as it plays North Carolina Central and Howard.
