William Reid came home to Colgate in 1919 as graduate manager of athletics and coach of baseball and basketball. During the nine years that he coached basketball, his teams won 133 games and lost 55. The 20 baseball teams he coached won 216, lost 118, and tied two. On September 1, 1935, after the retirement of Dr. Huntington he was appointed Director of the Division of Physical Education and Athletics. He was a member of, and held offices in, many of the associations and organizations in the field of athletics. Among them were vice-president of the Eastern College Athletic Conference, 1944-1945; member of the Executive Council of the Eastern College Athletic Conference, 1945-49. He was one of the eight founders and charter members of the National Football Hall of Fame. Reid Athletic Center, opened in 1959, was named in his honor. At Colgate he played varsity basketball in 1916, 1917, and 1918 and varsity baseball for four years, captaining the team in 1918.
