Charles Hubbell lettered four years in football and served as captain in 1917. The fleet-footed halfback was a member of the famous backfield of Anderson, Gillo, Spencer and Hubbell. He was fast afoot, an able outside runner, and good in the broken field. He was equally adept in receiving passes and was a punishing blocker. Perhaps his best collegiate performance came during a1916 win over powerful Illinois, which was undefeated for three years. His sensational runs lifted the Red Raiders to a 15-3 victory. Hubbell also was a member of the varsity baseball team as an outfielder.
