Considered one of the best running backs in Colgate gridiron history, Egler lettered three years under coach Paul Bixler. During each of his varsity campaigns, he was the Red Raiders' leading rusher and scorer. Egler, who averaged 5.7 yards per carry during his career, is Colgate's fourth all-time leading rusher with 2,170 yards. An honorable mention Associated Press All-America, he scored the East's only touchdown in the East-West Shrine game in 1950. He also played in the College All-Star game against the World Champion Cleveland Browns in Soldier Field, and was the third draft choice of the Los Angeles Rams.
