Women's Crew Claims Title at US Collegiate Championships

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. (5/24/10) – The Colgate women's rowing team won the collegiate double sculls title at the US Rowing Collegiate Championships on Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J.

“This was the inaugural event for the US Rowing Collegiate Nationals,” stated head coach Gregory Kruczynski. “The event allows the rowers to enter the Olympic events which is something we do not normally race during the course of the regular season.”

Doubles Vicky Hulit (Rye, N.Y.) and Lauren Schmetterling (Moorestown, N.J.) won the title with a time of 8:26.311, while Duke's crew of Alex Japhet and Laurel Sisler finished second with a time of 8:28.692.

“Lauren and Vicky have spent the entire year training for this race in addition to their other team responsibilities,” said Kruczynski. “I'm very happy that they were able to race at such a high level on Sunday. Lauren will be continuing her rowing over the summer as she joins the US Rowing selection camp later this month for the Under-23 World Championships. She will hope to make the cut for one of the sculling boats that will be traveling to Belarus in July.”
